Question 3

EasyOriginal question

Lines AB and CD cross at O. ∠AOC=(3x+10)∘\angle AOC = (3x + 10)^\circ and ∠BOD=(5x−30)∘\angle BOD = (5x - 30)^\circ. What is ∠BOC\angle BOC?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. ∠AOC\angle AOC and ∠BOD\angle BOD are vertically opposite, so they are equal: 3x+10=5x−303x + 10 = 5x - 30, giving x=20x = 20.

  2. So ∠AOC=3×20+10=70∘\angle AOC = 3 \times 20 + 10 = 70^\circ.

  3. ∠BOC\angle BOC sits next to ∠AOC\angle AOC on the straight line AB, so ∠BOC=180∘−70∘=110∘\angle BOC = 180^\circ - 70^\circ = 110^\circ.

Worth noting

70° is ∠AOC\angle AOC, not ∠BOC\angle BOC. 85° and 95° come from wrongly treating the two vertically opposite angles as supplementary (8x−20=180)(8x - 20 = 180).

Concept
Vertically opposite angles are equal; adjacent angles on a line add to 180°
