Question 10

MediumOriginal question

Two parallel lines are cut by a transversal. Of the two interior angles on the same side of the transversal, one is 30° less than twice the other. What is the larger of these two angles?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Co-interior angles between parallel lines add up to 180°.

  2. Let the smaller be xx; the larger is 2x−302x - 30. So x+2x−30=180x + 2x - 30 = 180, giving x=70x = 70.

  3. Larger angle = 2×70−30=110∘2 \times 70 - 30 = 110^\circ.

Worth noting

70° is the smaller angle. 30° comes from setting the angles equal, and 50° from making them add to 90°.
