Lines, Triangles and Circles · Question 7 of 67

Question 7

MediumOriginal question

Lines AB and CD are parallel, with AB above CD, A to the left of B and C to the left of D. A point E lies between the two lines, to the left of both B and D, and is joined to B and to D. If ∠ABE=40∘\angle ABE = 40^\circ and ∠CDE=55∘\angle CDE = 55^\circ, what is ∠BED\angle BED?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Draw a line through E parallel to AB (and so to CD). It splits ∠BED\angle BED into two parts.

  2. The upper part equals ∠ABE=40∘\angle ABE = 40^\circ (alternate angles).

  3. The lower part equals ∠CDE=55∘\angle CDE = 55^\circ (alternate angles).

  4. ∠BED=40∘+55∘=95∘\angle BED = 40^\circ + 55^\circ = 95^\circ.

Worth noting

When the point sits between the parallel lines and the angles open towards it, the angle at the point is the SUM of the two angles. 265° is the reflex angle at E.
