Question 36

MediumOriginal question

Triangle ABC is right-angled at B, with AB=9AB = 9 cm and BC=12BC = 12 cm. D is the point on AC such that BD is perpendicular to AC. What is DC?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. AC = 92+122=15\sqrt{9^2 + 12^2} = 15 cm.

  2. Triangles BDC and ABC are similar (they share ∠C\angle C and each has a right angle), so DCBC=BCAC\frac{DC}{BC} = \frac{BC}{AC}.

  3. DC=12215=14415=9.6DC = \frac{12^2}{15} = \frac{144}{15} = 9.6 cm.

Worth noting

5.4 cm is AD (92÷15)(9^2 \div 15), 7.2 cm is BD, and 7.5 cm is simply half of AC. DC is next to the longer leg, so it is the longer part.
