Question 50

MediumOriginal question

The diagonals of rectangle ABCD meet at O, and ∠AOB=118∘\angle AOB = 118^\circ. What is ∠OBC\angle OBC?

Options for question 50

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. The diagonals of a rectangle are equal and bisect each other, so OA=OBOA = OB.

  2. In isosceles triangle AOB, ∠OBA=(180∘−118∘)÷2=31∘\angle OBA = (180^\circ - 118^\circ) \div 2 = 31^\circ.

  3. ∠ABC=90∘\angle ABC = 90^\circ, so ∠OBC=90∘−31∘=59∘\angle OBC = 90^\circ - 31^\circ = 59^\circ.

Worth noting

31° is ∠OBA\angle OBA, the part of the right angle at B on the other side of the diagonal.
