Question 63

MediumOriginal question

AB is a diameter of a circle with centre O, and C is a point on the circle with ∠BOC=70∘\angle BOC = 70^\circ. What is ∠ABC\angle ABC?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. OB and OC are radii, so triangle OBC is isosceles.

  2. ∠OBC=∠OCB=(180∘−70∘)÷2=55∘\angle OBC = \angle OCB = (180^\circ - 70^\circ) \div 2 = 55^\circ.

  3. O lies on AB, so ∠ABC=∠OBC=55∘\angle ABC = \angle OBC = 55^\circ.

Worth noting

35° is ∠BAC\angle BAC (half of ∠BOC\angle BOC). Check: 35∘+55∘=90∘35^\circ + 55^\circ = 90^\circ, because ∠ACB\angle ACB is an angle in a semicircle.
