Question 36

MediumOriginal question

Rain falls to a depth of 2 cm on a flat roof 22 m long and 20 m wide, and all of it runs into a tank. How many litres of water reach the tank? (1 m3=1,000m^3 = 1{,}000 litres)

Options for question 36

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Depth of rain = 2 cm = 0.02 m.

  2. Volume = 22×20×0.02=8.822 \times 20 \times 0.02 = 8.8 m³.

  3. 8.8 m3=8,800m^3 = 8{,}800 litres.

Worth noting

4,400 litres uses 1 cm. 880 and 88 litres slip a zero or two in the conversion: 2 cm = 0.02 m and 1 m3=1,000m^3 = 1{,}000 litres.
