Question 50

MediumOriginal question

An iron pipe is 70 cm long. Its outer diameter is 14 cm and its inner diameter is 10 cm. What volume of iron is used in the pipe? Take π=227\pi = \frac{22}{7}.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Outer radius 7 cm, inner radius 5 cm.

  2. Iron = π(R2−r2)h=227×(49−25)×70\pi (R^2 - r^2) h = \frac{22}{7} \times (49 - 25) \times 70.

  3. = 22×24×10=5,28022 \times 24 \times 10 = 5{,}280 cm³.

Worth noting

880 cm³ uses (R−r)2=4(R - r)^2 = 4 instead of R2−r2=24R^2 - r^2 = 24. 10,780 cm³ is the whole solid rod with no hole.

Concept
Volume of a hollow cylinder = π(R² − r²)h
