Question 50

MediumOriginal question

A chemist pours 12 litres of a solution with acid and water in the ratio 2:32 : 3 into 8 litres of a solution with acid and water in the ratio 4:14 : 1. What percentage of the combined solution is acid?

Options for question 50

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Acid from the first = 25×12=4.8\frac{2}{5} \times 12 = 4.8 litres.

  2. Acid from the second = 45×8=6.4\frac{4}{5} \times 8 = 6.4 litres.

  3. Acid % = 4.8+6.420×100=11.220×100=56%\frac{4.8 + 6.4}{20} \times 100 = \frac{11.2}{20} \times 100 = 56\%.

Worth noting

60% is the average of 40% and 80%, correct only for equal volumes. 64% swaps the volumes; 44% is the water percentage.
