Mixtures & Alligation · Question 18 of 60

Question 18

MediumOriginal question

Alloy P has copper and zinc in the ratio 3:13 : 1; alloy Q has them in the ratio 1:31 : 3. In what ratio must P and Q be melted together to get an alloy with copper and zinc in the ratio 5:35 : 3?

Options for question 18

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Copper fraction: P = 34=75%\frac{3}{4} = 75\%, Q = 14=25%\frac{1}{4} = 25\%, target = 58=62.5%\frac{5}{8} = 62.5\%.

  2. P:Q=(62.5−25):(75−62.5)=37.5:12.5P : Q = (62.5 - 25) : (75 - 62.5) = 37.5 : 12.5.

  3. = 3:13 : 1.

Worth noting

Alligation works on the fraction of ONE component in each mixture, not on the ratios themselves. Convert each ratio to a fraction of the whole first.
