Mixtures & Alligation · Question 56 of 60

Question 56

HardOriginal question

A 60-litre mixture has milk and water in the ratio 4:14 : 1. How many litres of the mixture must be drawn off and replaced with water so that milk and water are in the ratio 1:11 : 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Milk now = 48 litres. For 1:11 : 1 in 60 litres, milk must fall to 30 litres.

  2. Drawing xx litres removes the fraction x60\frac{x}{60} of the milk: 48(1−x60)=3048\left(1 - \frac{x}{60}\right) = 30.

  3. 1−x60=581 - \frac{x}{60} = \frac{5}{8}, so x=60×38=22.5x = 60 \times \frac{3}{8} = 22.5 litres.

Worth noting

18 litres (48−30)(48 - 30) assumes the liquid drawn off is pure milk; it is four-fifths milk, so more must be drawn. Check: 22.5 litres carries 18 litres of milk away.
