Question 83

HardOriginal question

What is the area of the region bounded by the parabola y2=4xy^{2} = 4x and the line y=2x−4y = 2x - 4?

Options for question 83

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. As xx in terms of yy: the parabola is x=y24x = \frac{y^{2}}{4} and the line x=y+42x = \frac{y + 4}{2}. They meet where y2−2y−8=0y^{2} - 2y - 8 = 0, at y=−2y = -2 and y=4y = 4.

  2. Horizontal strips run from the parabola to the line: ∫−24(y+42−y24)dy\int_{-2}^{4} \left(\frac{y + 4}{2} - \frac{y^{2}}{4}\right)dy.

  3. [y24+2y−y312]−24=203+73=9\left[\frac{y^{2}}{4} + 2y - \frac{y^{3}}{12}\right]_{-2}^{4} = \frac{20}{3} + \frac{7}{3} = 9 square units.

Worth noting

323\frac{32}{3} uses vertical strips with the line as the lower edge all the way from x=0x = 0; for 0≤x≤10 \le x \le 1 the lower edge is the parabola's lower arm.
