Question 85

HardOriginal question

For k>0k > 0, the region bounded by the parabola y=kx2y = kx^{2} and the line y=4y = 4 has area 163\frac{16}{3} square units. What is kk?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The line meets the parabola where kx2=4kx^{2} = 4, at x=±2kx = \pm\frac{2}{\sqrt{k}}.

  2. Area =2∫02/k(4−kx2) dx=2(8k−83k)=323k= 2\int_0^{2/\sqrt{k}} (4 - kx^{2})\,dx = 2\left(\frac{8}{\sqrt{k}} - \frac{8}{3\sqrt{k}}\right) = \frac{32}{3\sqrt{k}}.

  3. 323k=163\frac{32}{3\sqrt{k}} = \frac{16}{3} gives k=2\sqrt{k} = 2, so k=4k = 4.

Worth noting

2 is k\sqrt{k}; it still has to be squared.
