Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 42 of 74

Question 42

MediumOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=x3+3x2−24x+1f(x) = x^{3} + 3 x^{2} - 24 x + 1 is strictly increasing.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=3(x−2)(x+4)f'(x) = 3 \left(x - 2\right) \left(x + 4\right), which is 0 at x=−4,2x = -4, 2.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (−∞,−4)∪(2,∞)(-\infty, -4) \cup (2, \infty) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−4,2)(-4, 2).

  3. So ff is strictly increasing on (−∞,−4)∪(2,∞)(-\infty, -4) \cup (2, \infty).

Worth noting

(−4,2)(-4, 2) is where it is strictly decreasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
