Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 43 of 74

Question 43

MediumOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=−x3+6x2−9x+4f(x) = - x^{3} + 6 x^{2} - 9 x + 4 is strictly increasing.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=−3(x−3)(x−1)f'(x) = - 3 \left(x - 3\right) \left(x - 1\right), which is 0 at x=1,3x = 1, 3.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (1,3)(1, 3) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−∞,1)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, 1) \cup (3, \infty).

  3. So ff is strictly increasing on (1,3)(1, 3).

Worth noting

(−∞,1)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, 1) \cup (3, \infty) is where it is strictly decreasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
