Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 41 of 74

Question 41

MediumOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=xlog⁡xf(x) = x \log x is strictly decreasing for x>0x > 0.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=log⁡x+1f'(x) = \log x + 1, which is 0 at x=e−1x = e^{-1}.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (e−1,∞)(e^{-1}, \infty) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (0,e−1)(0, e^{-1}).

  3. So ff is strictly decreasing on (0,e−1)(0, e^{-1}).

Worth noting

(e−1,∞)(e^{-1}, \infty) is where it is strictly increasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
