Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 55 of 74

Question 55

MediumOriginal question

On which interval is f(x)=log⁡(sin⁡x)f(x) = \log(\sin x) strictly decreasing?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. log⁡(sin⁡x)\log(\sin x) is defined where sin⁡x>0\sin x > 0, and f′(x)=cos⁡xsin⁡x=cot⁡xf'(x) = \frac{\cos x}{\sin x} = \cot x.

  2. cot⁡x<0\cot x < 0 on (π2,π)\left(\frac{\pi}{2}, \pi\right), so ff falls there (and rises on (0,π2)\left(0, \frac{\pi}{2}\right)).

Worth noting

On (π,2π)(\pi, 2\pi), sin⁡x<0\sin x < 0, so log⁡(sin⁡x)\log(\sin x) is not defined there at all.
