Question 56

MediumOriginal question

Two pipes can fill a storage tank in 20 minutes and 24 minutes. A drain at the bottom lets out 3 litres per minute. With both pipes and the drain open, the empty tank fills in 15 minutes. What is the capacity of the tank?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Pipes together: 120+124=11120\frac{1}{20} + \frac{1}{24} = \frac{11}{120} of the tank per minute.

  2. With the drain the net is 115=8120\frac{1}{15} = \frac{8}{120}, so the drain removes 3120=140\frac{3}{120} = \frac{1}{40} of the tank per minute.

  3. 140\frac{1}{40} of the tank = 3 litres, so the tank holds 3×40=1203 \times 40 = 120 litres.

Worth noting

Check: the pipes add 6 and 5 litres a minute, the drain removes 3, net 8 litres a minute, and 120÷8=15120 \div 8 = 15 minutes. 40 is the drain's emptying time in minutes, not the capacity.
