Question 76

MediumOriginal question

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. y=x2y = x^{2} meets x+y=2x + y = 2 where x2+x−2=0x^{2} + x - 2 = 0, at x=1x = 1 in the first quadrant; the line meets the xx-axis at x=2x = 2.

  2. The top edge is the parabola for 0≤x≤10 \le x \le 1 and the line for 1≤x≤21 \le x \le 2: ∫01x2 dx+∫12(2−x) dx=13+12=56\int_0^{1} x^{2}\,dx + \int_1^{2} (2 - x)\,dx = \frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{2} = \frac{5}{6}.

Worth noting

∫01(2−x−x2) dx\int_0^{1} (2 - x - x^{2})\,dx is the region between the line and the parabola, which is closed off by the yy-axis, not the xx-axis.
