Question 33

HardOriginal question

Evaluate ∫dx1+e−x\int \frac{dx}{1 + e^{-x}}.

Options for question 33

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Multiply top and bottom by exe^{x}: 11+e−x=exex+1\frac{1}{1 + e^{-x}} = \frac{e^{x}}{e^{x} + 1}.

  2. The top is the derivative of the bottom: log⁡(1+ex)+C\log(1 + e^{x}) + C.

Worth noting

log⁡(1+e−x)\log(1 + e^{-x}) takes the bottom as it stands, but its derivative is −e−x-e^{-x}, not the top.
