What a time series is

A cycle shop has kept its yearly sales since 2019. The numbers go up most years, dip in some, and the owner wants to know the underlying direction so as to plan stock for 2025. Reading that direction out of data recorded over time is the subject of this chapter.

What is a time series?

A time series is a set of values of one variable recorded at successive points of time, in time order: yearly sales, monthly rainfall, daily prices. Time is the independent variable and the recorded value depends on it; a series with one variable is called univariate.

Components of a time series

What are the components of a time series?

There are four. The secular trend is the long-term tendency to rise or fall over many years. Seasonal variation is a pattern that repeats within a year, tied to seasons, festivals or customs. Cyclical variation is a slow rise and fall over more than a year, as in a business cycle. Irregular variation comes from one-off, unforeseen events such as floods or strikes.

Watch out

Both seasonal and cyclical variation repeat, but seasonal variation repeats within a year, while a cycle lasts longer than a year and has no fixed length.

Trend by moving averages

How do you find a trend by moving averages?

Average each run of kk consecutive values, moving one step at a time, and place each average against the middle of its run. This smooths out short-term ups and downs; the first and last few years get no trend value.

Example 1 · A 3-year moving average

The shop's sales, in lakh rupees, for 2019 to 2023 are 8, 10, 13, 14 and 15. Find the 3-year moving averages.

  1. 8+10+133=313≈10.33\frac{8 + 10 + 13}{3} = \frac{31}{3} \approx 10.33, placed against 2020.

  2. Then 10+13+143=373≈12.33\frac{10 + 13 + 14}{3} = \frac{37}{3} \approx 12.33 against 2021, and 13+14+153=14\frac{13 + 14 + 15}{3} = 14 against 2022.

Answer

10.33, 12.33 and 14, for 2020, 2021 and 2022.

With an even period, such as 4 years, each average falls between two years; averaging neighbouring pairs, called centring, puts the values against years again.

A straight-line trend by least squares

How do you fit a straight-line trend by least squares?

Fit y=a+bxy = a + bx using the normal equations ∑y=na+b∑x\sum y = na + b\sum x and ∑xy=a∑x+b∑x2\sum xy = a\sum x + b\sum x^{2}. With an odd number of years, measure xx from the middle year so that ∑x=0\sum x = 0; then simply a=∑yna = \frac{\sum y}{n} and b=∑xy∑x2b = \frac{\sum xy}{\sum x^{2}}.

Example 2 · The shop's trend line

Fit a straight-line trend to the sales 8, 10, 13, 14, 15 for 2019 to 2023, and estimate the trend for 2025.

  1. With x=−2,−1,0,1,2x = -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 from 2021: ∑y=60\sum y = 60, ∑xy=−16−10+0+14+30=18\sum xy = -16 - 10 + 0 + 14 + 30 = 18, ∑x2=10\sum x^{2} = 10.

  2. a=605=12a = \frac{60}{5} = 12, b=1810=1.8b = \frac{18}{10} = 1.8, so y=12+1.8xy = 12 + 1.8x. For 2025, x=4x = 4: y=12+7.2=19.2y = 12 + 7.2 = 19.2.

Answer

y=12+1.8xy = 12 + 1.8x, with xx in years from 2021; about 19.2 lakh rupees in 2025.

The slope bb is the trend's change per year, and aa is the trend value in the origin year.

How CUET asks this chapter

  • Time series: which data form one, which variable is independent.
  • Components: name the component behind an example, or read them from a graph.
  • Moving averages: a 3-year or centred 4-year average, how many there are, where each is placed.
  • Least squares: aa, bb, the normal equations, the meaning of the slope, a trend value for a later year.

Exam shortcuts

  • Seasonal: within a year; cyclical: longer than a year; trend: long-term; irregular: one-off.
  • nn values give n−k+1n - k + 1 moving averages of period kk.
  • xx from the middle year: a=yˉa = \bar{y}, b=∑xy∑x2b = \frac{\sum xy}{\sum x^{2}}.
  • Count xx for a later year from the origin year, not from the last year of data.

Common mistakes

  • Calling a yearly pattern cyclical.
  • Placing a moving average against the last year of its run.
  • Dividing ∑xy\sum xy by nn instead of ∑x2\sum x^{2}.
  • Reading the slope as a percentage growth.

Quick revision

Components

  • Trend, seasonal, cyclical, irregular
  • Seasonal within a year, cyclical over years

Measuring trend

What a time series is

7 questions

Which of these is a time series?

Options for question 1

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerB · India's rice output for each year from 2015 to 2025

  1. A time series records one quantity at successive points of time, in time order.

  2. Rice output year by year is such a record. The others compare different students, players or states at a single time.

Worth noting

The ten states' populations carry a year, but it is one year for all of them: the data run across places, not through time.

In a time series, which is the independent variable?

Options for question 2

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerD · Time

  1. The values are recorded against time, which runs on regardless.

  2. So time is the independent variable, and the value recorded depends on it.

Worth noting

The value recorded is the dependent variable, plotted on the vertical axis.

Read the two statements and choose the correct option.

I. A time series is data arranged in the order of time.

II. A univariate time series records one variable over time.

Options for question 3

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerC · Both I and II

  1. I: chronological order is what makes data a time series. True.

  2. II: 'univariate' means a single variable, such as yearly sales. True.

Which of these is NOT a time series?

Options for question 4

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerB · The marks of 40 students in one test

  1. A time series records one quantity at successive points of time.

  2. The test marks are 40 different students at one moment, not one quantity over time.

When a time series is plotted, where does time usually go?

Options for question 5

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerB · On the horizontal axis

  1. Time is the independent variable, so it goes along the horizontal axis.

  2. The quantity measured goes on the vertical axis.

Which of these describes a univariate time series?

Options for question 6

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerD · The values of one variable recorded over time

  1. 'Univariate' means one variable; a time series records it at successive times.

  2. So a univariate time series is one variable, such as monthly sales, followed through time.

Worth noting

Ordering values by size destroys the time order, which is the whole point of a time series.

Read the two statements and choose the correct option.

I. Studying a time series helps to forecast future values.

II. The order of the observations does not matter in a time series.

Options for question 7

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerA · Only I

  1. I: the pattern of the past, such as a trend, is projected forward. True.

  2. II: a time series is defined by its time order; shuffling it loses the trend and seasons. False.

  1. The 4-year moving averages are 10+14+12+184=13.5\frac{10 + 14 + 12 + 18}{4} = 13.5 and 14+12+18+204=16\frac{14 + 12 + 18 + 20}{4} = 16; each falls between two years.

  2. Centring averages the two: 13.5+162=14.75\frac{13.5 + 16}{2} = 14.75, placed against the third year.

Worth noting

13.5 is the first uncentred average, which sits between years 2 and 3, against no year.

A series has the values 8, 12, 10, 14 and 18 for five years. What is the first centred 4-year moving average?

A tractor maker fits the trend y=120+6xy = 120 + 6x to its yearly sales, where yy is sales in thousands and xx is years counted from 2020 (x=0x = 0 in 2020).

What does the 6 in the tractor maker's trend y=120+6xy = 120 + 6x mean?

Options for question 51

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerA · Sales rise by about 6 thousand tractors a year

  1. 6 is the slope: each extra year adds 6 to yy.

  2. yy is in thousands, so about 6 thousand tractors a year.

Worth noting

A straight-line trend adds a fixed amount each year, not a fixed percentage.

A dealer's scooter sales, in hundreds, were 42, 45, 51, 54 and 60 in the five years 2020 to 2024.

  2. y=15+2.7×4=25.8y = 15 + 2.7 \times 4 = 25.8.

Worth noting

28.5 uses x=5x = 5, counting 2023 itself as the first year.

The trend line of a company's output is y=120+8xy = 120 + 8x, with x=0x = 0 at 2020 and xx in years. What does the 8 tell us?

Options for question 55

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerD · The trend rises by 8 units every year

  1. In y=a+bxy = a + bx, bb is the change in the trend value when xx goes up by 1, that is per year.

  2. So the trend output rises by 8 units a year; the 120 is the trend value for 2020.

Worth noting

The slope is a fixed amount, not a percentage: a straight-line trend adds the same quantity each year.

The graph shows a firm's sales yy, in lakh rupees, for 2020 to 2024, with the least-squares trend line y=39.6+4.5xy = 39.6 + 4.5x, where xx is measured in years from 2022. What trend value does the line give for 2026?

AnswerB · It makes ∑x=0\sum x = 0, so a=∑yna = \frac{\sum y}{n} and b=∑xy∑x2b = \frac{\sum xy}{\sum x^{2}}

  1. The normal equations are ∑y=na+b∑x\sum y = na + b\sum x and ∑xy=a∑x+b∑x2\sum xy = a\sum x + b\sum x^{2}.

  2. With ∑x=0\sum x = 0 they separate: a=∑yna = \frac{\sum y}{n}, b=∑xy∑x2b = \frac{\sum xy}{\sum x^{2}}.

For a straight line y=a+bxy = a + bx fitted by least squares, which of the following are true?

I. It makes the sum of the squared vertical distances from the points as small as possible.

II. The deviations of the actual values from the trend values add up to 0.

III. It passes through the point (xˉ,yˉ)(\bar{x}, \bar{y}).

IV. Its slope bb is always positive.

Options for question 58

AnswerD · I, II and III only

  1. I is what 'least squares' means. II and III follow from the first normal equation, ∑y=na+b∑x\sum y = na + b\sum x.

  2. IV is false: a falling series gives a negative slope.

A straight-line trend y=a+bxy = a + bx is fitted by least squares to the output 30, 34, 37, 41 and 48 for 2020 to 2024, with xx in years from 2022. What is aa?

2050 adds the 30 of 1806\frac{180}{6} to 2020, forgetting the 120 already there.

A tractor maker fits the trend y=120+6xy = 120 + 6x to its yearly sales, where yy is sales in thousands and xx is years counted from 2020 (x=0x = 0 in 2020).

The tractor maker actually sold 150 thousand in 2024. What does the gap between this and the trend show?

Options for question 63

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerD · Sales were 6 thousand above trend, from short-term movements

  1. 2024 is x=4x = 4: the trend gives 120+24=144120 + 24 = 144.

  2. 150−144=6150 - 144 = 6 above trend: the part the trend leaves to seasonal, cyclical and irregular movements.

Worth noting

A single year off the line does not make the trend wrong; real values scatter around it.

For the same sales 10, 12, 15, 17 and 21 (2021 to 2025, xx in years from 2023), what is the slope bb of the least-squares trend line?

AnswerC · 2.72.7

  1. With ∑x=0\sum x = 0, b=∑xy∑x2b = \frac{\sum xy}{\sum x^{2}}. Here ∑xy=−20−12+0+17+42=27\sum xy = -20 - 12 + 0 + 17 + 42 = 27 and ∑x2=4+1+0+1+4=10\sum x^{2} = 4 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 4 = 10.

  2. b=2710=2.7b = \frac{27}{10} = 2.7: sales rise by about 2.7 a year.

Worth noting

5.4 divides ∑xy\sum xy by n=5n = 5 instead of by ∑x2=10\sum x^{2} = 10.

Which pair of normal equations gives aa and bb in the least-squares line y=a+bxy = a + bx for nn observations?

Options for question 65

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerD · ∑y=na+b∑x\sum y = na + b\sum x and ∑xy=a∑x+b∑x2\sum xy = a\sum x + b\sum x^{2}

  1. Summing y=a+bxy = a + bx over all nn points gives ∑y=na+b∑x\sum y = na + b\sum x.

  2. Multiplying by xx first and then summing gives ∑xy=a∑x+b∑x2\sum xy = a\sum x + b\sum x^{2}.

Worth noting

The second pair writes ∑y=a+b∑x\sum y = a + b\sum x: adding aa up nn times gives nana, not aa.

A straight-line trend, with xx in years from 2022, gives trend values 50 for 2020 and 66 for 2024. What is its equation?

Options for question 66

Show the explanationHide the explanation

AnswerD · y=58+4xy = 58 + 4x

  1. At 2020, x=−2x = -2: a−2b=50a - 2b = 50. At 2024, x=2x = 2: a+2b=66a + 2b = 66.

  2. Adding: a=58a = 58; subtracting: 4b=164b = 16, so b=4b = 4.

Worth noting

y=50+4xy = 50 + 4x puts the 2020 value at x=0x = 0, but the origin is 2022.

For the same output 30, 34, 37, 41 and 48 (2020 to 2024, xx in years from 2022), what is the slope bb of the least-squares trend line?

  2. b=4310=4.3b = \frac{43}{10} = 4.3 a year.

Worth noting

8.6 divides by n=5n = 5 instead of ∑x2=10\sum x^{2} = 10; 4.5 is the average yearly rise, first to last.
